A fictionalized account of the 2004 novel under the same name written by journalist Jon Ronson, McGregor plays Ann Arbor Daily Telegram reporter Bob Wilton, and he investigates a unit of the U.S. Army that attempts to train its soldiers in telepathic capabilities after traveling to Iraq to cover the war.
