The '80s was an amazing and truly game-changing time for anime in film. With smash hits such as My Neighbor Totoro and Akira, the world was treated to some great content throughout the entire decade, and the genre saw an expansion like never before. But in a decade as good as that, there are genuinely amazing films that fall under the radar while others jump into the limelight.
The visuals of Demon City Shinjuku are stellar in almost every way. The breathtaking sword combat found in Kyoya's action sequences is beautifully animated and the atmosphere throughout the film's world is lifeless in all the best ways. The director, Yoshiaki Kawajiri, is well known for his gritty works, including the likes of Vampire D: Bloodlust and Ninja Scroll. Thus, it's no secret that Demon City Shinjuku turned out the way that it did.
Fun fact, Vampire Hunter D came out 13 years before the iconic Blade released, which also features a part-vampire vampire hunter. Vampire Hunter D is commonly regarded as one of the best vampire-related anime flicks. It is gory and over-the-top yet elegant and rewarding, one of the few anime films of the '80s that is truly singular, even today. It's a great addition to the dark fantasy genre and well worth the watch for fans of vampires and action anime in general.
Even in the modern day, Wicked City's animation quality is absolutely top-notch in every way. In the typical style of Kawajiri, Wicked City is incredibly dark and not for the faint of heart: it's over-the-top, gruesome, erotic, and action-packed as heck. The characters are incredibly memorable, the animation is beautiful, the action is thrilling, and the story is super wacky.
