Young drivers will soon not need to learn how to change gear

Young drivers won’t have to learn how to change gears in the near future, the president of the AA has said.

The number of driving tests taken in automatic cars has more than tripled since 2008 – rising from 3.8% to 13.8%, Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency data shows. Electric cars are all automatic, and with petrol and diesel motors set to be banned from 2030, more and more people think learning to drive a manual isn’t worth it.

The AA – the UK’s largest driving school – will introduce lessons specifically for electric cars for the very first time. Rather than learning how and when to change gears, students will be taught to drive with one pedal and how to conserve their battery.‘The world of cars is changing. A revolution is coming. I think younger people are beginning to realise that 2030 is really not very far away.

We already had this. You can and could pass without learning gears for at least 25 years now. It's called an Automatic only Driving Licence. Plus most if not all buses are Automatic, it's not uncommon for buss and Taxi drivers to drive purely automatic their entire lives.

Only new drivers who will be purchasing new cars… the way things are going… they won’t even be able to afford 20 year old cars 🙄

My Dad believed that automatic drivers are not in proper control of their vehicles. I tend to agree with him. Why not make electric cars with gears?

When my son was learning to drive a couple of years ago his instructor switched to an Automatic . Best thing 👍

Pretty sure it's just the sale of new petrol and diesel cars. Not the existing ones banned. Stop your click bait crap. 🙄
