As fashion moves towards a greener outlook, the word “sustainability” can start to feel diluted. How can we, as consumers, ensure that the clothes we purchase are truly sustainable, from supplier to shop floor? “Responsibility”, rather, is a word at the forefront of’s practices. To develop the brand’s latest wool fabrication, the team traced every step of the material’s supply chain to ensure it was in line with its conscious company policies.

The process behind the sharp suiting in three diverse colourways – classic navy-and-white pinstripes, and punchy orange and turquoise – begins with the origins of the fabric in New Zealand. Boss works with ZQ-certified farmers who treat their sheep like sheep, and not like machines. Mulesing, a painful process of removing wool-bearing skin to prevent myiasis – an infection caused by flies attacking the surface area – is prohibited, and animal welfare is safeguarded at the highest standards.

Once the sheep are shorn, the yarn is spun and the fabric is woven in Italy at REDA, a family-run weavers whose industry-respected methods date back over 150 years. From there, the slim-fit jackets and trousers are tailored at the Hugo Boss factory in Izmir, Turkey, where quality control is rigorously managed. While many singular garments have tens of steps from conception to end product, Boss’s suits have just three before the pieces are then shipped to its stores.

“Boss is continuously looking for more sustainable ways to produce and finish our products,” says Andreas Streubig, director of global sustainability, who manages a 30-strong team dedicated to ethical and ecological policies. “Clear guidelines, sound knowledge, and dialogue with partners and customers help the brand to integrate sustainability in our daily decisions.
