Yasmin Finney has arrived – and our screens aren’t likely to be the same again. In the December 2022 issue of British Vogue, Amel Mukhtar meets the teen queen of 'Heartstopper' as she verges on superstardom.

A dream for any young actor, not least one with a single screen credit, the role will turn the teen into a household name – and is set to reshape the TV landscape in the process. I mean, how many young trans actors can you name in long-running prime-time BBC dramas, not to mention a series as quintessentially middle England as? “It will change the world,” she says knowingly, eyes sparkling over high cheekbones.

“There are spies. If I talk about the Whoniverse, it’s over,” she deadpans. “All I can say is, I feel so honoured to be seen by Russell… I remember growing up idolising it.” In this “very inclusive” iteration, “I’m happy to be the representation on a show that means a lot to so many.” Finney has always felt a call to represent. It was on TikTok – where she currently has 1.8 million followers and counting – that she found her first audience creating videos about the trans experience, the most viral on a crush’s reaction on learning. – in which house mother Elektra snaps back at a transphobe without taking a breath – caught the eye of actor Billy Porter’s team, who asked her to send a self-tape for the lead role in his directorial debut.

Blue plaques installed criticising Shrewsbury MP Daniel Kawczynski over raw sewage issueCampaigners have installed blue plaques around a town, accusing its MP of 'shamefully' voting to dump raw sewage into the River Severn. I would describe voting to allow raw sewage to be released into waterways as vandalism. Sardonic plaques are not. As for direct contact with Daniel, as one of the more inaccessible and thin skinned MP’s that is beyond parody Speak directly, didn’t he refuse to engage and attend meetings with Up Sewage Creek last year, promised a statement and then didn’t deliver. Usual crap from the Tories chief local propagandist I'm not one of his constituents (be careful what you wish for) but he is notorious for ignoring all contact. Like other MPs he needs to own what he supports, so time he went swimming in the Severn. With a wetsuit and suitable safety precautions of course.
