In the small community surrounding Robb Elementary School, front lawns are peppered with political signs. It is just a few days until the US midterm elections, and campaigning is in full swing. But one issue looms large over the south Texas city of Uvalde: guns.

Off one of Uvalde’s two arterial highways, dozens of pickup trucks pull into the driveway of Julio’s grill, often considered the best Mexican in town. They’re arriving for a meet and greet with Texas Congressman Tony Gonzales, a Republican who is shoring up his support in towns across the state in the run up to the midterms.

“I feel we are losing the foundation of what it means to be parents. It’s a culture change; what we are telling young people has value, is right, has changed.” who once interrupted a press conference by Governor Greg Abbott over the Uvalde shooting to challenge him on gun violenceOn the same day, Democratic State Senator Roland Gutierrez, flanked by three of the bereaved families, unveils a new bill to win compensation for those affected by the Robb Elementary shooting. $7.7m for those whose children died, to mark the 77 minutes officers took to act, $2.

Relatives of Irma Garcia, a teacher who was killed in Robb Elementary School, and her husband Joe, who died of a heart attack a few days later, hold signs supporting Beto O’Rourke for Texas Governor, outside Uvalde’s civic centre. “It is a political issue,” he says plainly. “Children are dying in my community. That’s personal to me. People elected me, they hired me to fix it and I have to fix it in a political setting.

“The politicians divided everybody. My employees lost children, and now one of them is running for commissioner. I said to him, you haven’t had time to grieve yet, they just came and got you. It’s been politicised, and used.” “Because it’s a constitutional right, I don’t want things to change. I want us to look at parenting. It’s about getting to the root of the issue. Guns can’t do damage alone.”

But the conversations, she says, have been more difficult this year. “The hostility has risen,” she says. “The families, Beto riled them up. Conversations have definitely been harder. The families are angry, and there’s nowhere to direct it to, because the person who did it is gone. My hearts are broken for them.”
