Studying the past is futile in an unprecedented crisis. Science is the answer – and information is paramount, says Jeni Tennison of the Open Data Institute

Wherever we look, there is a demand for data about Covid-19. We devour dashboards, graphs and visualisations. We want to know about the numbers of tests, cases and deaths; how many beds and ventilators are available, how many NHS workers are off sick. When information is missing, we speculate about what the government might be hiding, or fill in the gaps with anecdotes.

1/2 Re Singapore & open data, “This can both harm the people who are documented and incentivise others to lie to authorities, undermining the quality of data.” Completely wrong, and I say that as a resident.Nobody here has any issue whatsoever with this transparency, if anything

The more data the better. The more people analysing the data, the greater our chance of beating CV. The UK has a massive pool of underutilised expertise. The US efforts seem more advanced in coordinating data & knowledge. Are our privacy laws too inflexible for this crisis?

kofullu Guardian, you silly billies. Have you not been paying attention? The UK government confiscates data FROM the plebs. It does not provide data TO the plebs. Not even their own data is provided back to them. This has been going on for years. FATCA FOIA GDPR DataBreach kalyeena

They’re deceiving the public.

More data is not good for them, they need smoke and mirrors to tell us lies if the entire thing goes pear shaped

It’s hiding it. It’s also not testing so we don’t have real numbers.

Maybe, just maybe, the priority every day is treating sick people, rather than gathering stats so that data crunchers are satisfied. Get a grip you muppet.

I know from personal experience (my sister's death March 23rd) that postmortems were cancelled at her hospital due to the virus.

I think many are kept alive with venilators. Once venilators are pulled off, they won't survive. Many are in a coma.

I expect they're quite busy at the moment

How long do they normally take?
