Fairly sure Catalans would disagree that Spain has been a successful example of coexistence and synergy.

The Catalan independence movement (whether that's a good idea or not) wants self government, not barriers. The UK wants barriers. They're very different ideas and movements. Catalunya wants to be in the EU, an equal partner. Just self governing.

significant difference is that you don't get beaten up by the 'police' for expressing a dissenting view in Britain (and by Britain, do you mean England?)
