Wes Streeting has backed Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer after he said the NHS is hiring too many foreign staff members

The Opposition leader came under fire last week after saying the focus should be on training more people in the UK and immigration was not the answer to the crisis in the NHS.

Shadow health secretary Wes Streeting backed Sir Keir during LBC's Tonight with Andrew Marr, saying the service had become over-reliant on overseas talent. The Andrew Marr show tonight."We've got a problem in this country where we have a big staffing crisis at the heart of the NHS - it is the central issue in terms of the challenge that the NHS faces."And because the government have failed to recruit homegrown talent, they are forced to over-rely on staff from overseas.

He added: "There's a general point here which is that the NHS has always been and will always be an international recruiter and employer and I think it's wonderful thing that we have in the NHS people from around the world that make such an enormous difference to patients but there is an over- reliance.

"This summer we turned away huge numbers of straight A students from university, provided 3,000 fewer medicine places than the year before in the middle of a staffing crisis and that's an absurd way to run a health service.

Normally I think wesstreeting is quite sensible but this appears to be pandering to the right wing xenophobes again. So depressing. And btw you can’t just nip to Sainsbury's* and get a few “British” nurses. They take years to train. *Other supermarkets are available.

We are clearly employing South East Asian nurses as they are cheaper to train up and pay .

that is disgraceful. You know that is not what Starmer said. Pathetic.

Shame what is happening to the 2 main political parties

Unprincipled and very much part of the problem: I wish they'd get out of the way and allow a real opposition to emerge. But that's what they're there to prevent.

Siri, show me a nick Ferrari written tweet

Oh come on bridget, don't turn into the BBC, they are saying that because pay is low, conditions are bad, people aren't trying to be nurses when it takes 4 years to train. So that gap has to be plugged. They want reform, and to make NHS an international employer of merit.

SocialistVoice Wez and Keef's bosses share a lot of common views as well...

no. that's not what gee said

Using click bait headlines to fan the flames of the right wing mantra really isn't helping the country. mrjamesob wasn't your excellent programme this morning based on similar creep of media based radicalisation? This LBC headline is really poor once you read the facts

Where are the British nurses waiting in the wings?

Wes Streeting also intends to outsource NHS services go private companies The Labour Party is an absolute cesspit and nothing more than a carbon copy of the Tories

Absolute click bait. So dissapointing as you now actually have some half decent presenters

Idiot

Car crash. Really bad timing with the rhetoric about migrants.

Out of context clickbait nonsense.

The Labour left would have us setting maximum quotas for UK produced staff if they could. They love immigration lol.

I can't blame Starmer for doing what is required to win. Blame the electorate for being so thick and nasty. The thick nasty votes are effectively worth double and it's not sensible to give the Tories a monopoly on them.

They are, 100%. Filling vacancies because we can’t train enough staff.

It’s hiring too many non clinical staff - equally & diversity officers as well as Net Zero compliance officers.

NHS nurse of 39 years here. My heart/head hurts.

Just mental, lost my vote

Keir Starmer Criticised For Saying The NHS Is Recruiting 'Too Many People From Overseas'The Labour leader has been accused of 'grubby dog-whistling' over immigration. KevinASchofield Right, before the pile on - we do need people who find the NHS an attractive career path when they're leaving school here.
