Labour leader argues that just because a referendum is 'legally permissible' does not mean it should happen now

Labour leader argues that just because a referendum is ‘legally permissible’ does not mean it should happen nowScotland EditorThe SNP should postpone its plan to hold a second Scottish independence referendum even if the Supreme Court says such a vote would be legal, Sir Keir Starmer has said.

The Labour leader said that just because a referendum legislated for by Holyrood was “legally permissible” did not mean that it should happen now. He cited the climate emergency, the war in Ukraine, the UK’s energy security problems and the cost of living crisis as reasons why indyref2 should not happen next year., but whether or not it takes place rests entirely on a forthcoming Supreme Court judgment.

The UK’s highest court has been asked to determine whether Holyrood has the power to legislate for its own referendum, or whether this lies exclusively with Westminster.
