Anger over Gaza in the swing state of Michigan might cost the president the election

n Dearborn, Michigan, on the morning of Eid al-Fitr, I met three young men outside America’s largest mosque. The Islamic Centre of America is an enormous sandstone and limestone building, its central golden dome is flanked by two towering minarets. The mosque lies on a thoroughfare called Ford Road, named after Henry, who came from the city, which is just outside Detroit. Thousands of people had congregated to mark the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting.

In the weeks leading up to the Michigan primaries in February, Listen to Michigan, a group calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, urged Democrats to register their dissent at the ballot box. Some 100,000 Democrats, more than one in ten, voted Uncommitted – a category akin to “none of the above” . In Dearborn itself, Uncommitted received 56% of the Democratic vote.

In Michigan’s presidential primaries more than one in ten Democrats voted Uncommitted, a category akin to “none of the above” For Abdualrahman Hamad, there is no balancing the virtue of domestic policies against “a genocide that’s being livestreamed” “Look, I hate Trump,” he continued. “With every fibre of my being. I know what he is. But I’ve talked to so many people who voted for whose attitude is now, ‘we have to make lose, at any cost. And rather than voting for a third party, I’m going to double my vote and vote for Trump.’ It shocked me at first. But you want to do everything you can to make him pay the price.”pictured above
