Your top home hair colouring question answered 👏 – from the best way to cover grey to refreshing a blonde balayage

If you want to know pretty much anything about home hair colouring then the person you want to ask before attempting anything is Josh Wood.

With salons also now shut for until at least next month, we need Josh’s advice more than ever – and thankfully we managed to pin him down to answer all of your very own burning hair colouring questions. It depends on the formulation and brand you pick as they all vary, but you can get good results at home. The most important thing is always to concentrate on where your hair actually NEEDS the colour. That way you’re limiting the amount of skill required as you’re focusing on a smaller area.

The smudger has a porous applicator and is able to cover bigger areas of grey. If you don’t have much to conceal then start by trying the Blending Brush, as this is for a smaller area. But if you have larger patches of grey regrowth then the Root Smudger is quicker and easier. It’s also a wet-to-dry formula so it sticks to the hair well and doesn’t get powder all over your clothes. Not really, no. A semi-permanent is about enhancing and glossing your existing colour.
