Sophie McGuire's condition causes organ problems and affects her eyes.

A vulnerable young woman was left covered in bruises after she was wrongly restrained in a mental health unit, her mother has claimed.

Lynn, 52, first saw bruises in August 2019 after Sophie was detained in Ward 1 at the hospital - the same psychiatric intensive care ward where a man died amid claims he was over-sedated. "She was restrained in a pod for up to four hours at a time. She was prone restrained - six adults pinned her face down with her arms up her back." Lynn has now spoken out at the treatment of her daughter in the same hospital.

Sophie, who was sectioned in 2019 after years of mental health issues, suffers from Bardet-Biedl Syndrome - a complex disorder which seriously affects the eyesight and can lead to renal disease and other organ issues. In a report from Stirling Council a caseworker in August 2019 wrote: "Discussed restraints with SN and medics have reviewed Sophie's condition and have deemed that prone restraints are unsuitable due to her medical condition.

"They tried to have her branded a danger to society so they could lock her up for the rest of her life." The hospital ultimately banned visits and electronic devices so none of her friends and family saw her for more than a year. However, Forth Valley Health Board said there was no clinical evidence to support the use of B12 injections as a treatment for psychosis.

Scots teen with cancer raising £350k for life-saving treatment abroadA Scots teen with cancer whose healthy twin experienced 'phantom' symptoms is raising £350k for life-saving treatment abroad. Sophie Walker, 17, from Edinburgh was diagnosed with Wilms tumour, a type of kidney cancer, in October 2017. Strangely, her twin sister, Megan, also suffered from similar symptoms - including back pain in the same location as Sophie's tumour - despite not having the disease herself. Since then, Sophie has been given the all-clear three times but the cancer has always returned. Now the NHS has said they can't offer any more treatments and there are no clinical trials she can currently access. Her parents, Rebecca, 44, and Jamie Walker, 45 - along with Sophie's nine siblings - are fundraising for groundbreaking treatment abroad. They hope to take Sophie to Germany for transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) treatment to shrink the tumours and then to America for immunotherapy - and have raised £78k of the £350k needed
