Things might have been different if only Jack Kerouac had known how to hop a freight train. His attempts, described at the outset of the book that gained him celebrity, were a failure; a romantic notion from a bygone era that, in reality, proved tricky. Much easier to hitch a lorry ride. And thus the writer’s euphoric westward peregrinations, by motor car, kindled a new spirit of domestic US travel: On the Road rather than On the Railroad.
And because in the USA don't like trains, in Mexico we basically destroyed/sold our infrastructure (because we copy them in almost everything, but stupidly) and almost 30 years later we think about trains in touristic terms...
We did the Albuquerque to Flagstaff section:
I caught the train from LA to Alberquerque through amazing landscape. But the service was ordinary, the train was dirty and they left my luggage at LA and it took 4 days to get it back. Treat it like a third world train (which are usually cleaner) and don't trust their BS.
