University researchers are urging the government to prevent an "environmental disaster" caused by face mask litter.
A study from the University of Portsmouth found mask litter increased by 9,000% in the first seven months of the pandemic and could have led to further spread of the virus. During their study, researchers discovered two million littered masks were collected across 11 counties.Researchers from the university believe the plastic pollution caused by face mask litter could last hundreds of years.

Wow. Amazing to think a society that basically didn’t ever wear masks produced very little face mask litter. And when they did start wearing them then the level of mask litter went up from a very low base. Impressive stuff, particularly the 9000% bit.
A bit of a stupid study and misleading headline. Mask usage has probably increase by at least as much. Is this ground breaking research? I really hope this is not being funded by the taxpayer.

It never fails to amaze me, how people in the article are demanding new legislation in which to combat..’Litter’ No they don’t. The law is already in place, and if the people in power started doing their job, by enforcing the law, they will find that the problem will go away.
