The university catering service's chef went to Borough Market in London for inspiration for the plant-based menu
The catering service's chefs were given vegan cookery classes and cafe managers were given training in sustainability. The university also listed the vegetarian and vegan options before the meat items and changed how food was labelled on their menus. Catering manager Paula White said unlike most restaurants the university's eating places did not label food as vegetarian or vegan.
She said:"We just put what's in it. You use your eyes, your nose. If you look at something and think 'Wow, that looks good', you're not first of all thinking 'Is there beef in that?'" Nick White, head of the catering service, said:"This has involved making sacrifices, but is has been absolutely the right thing to do.Media caption
And dairy! Get with the programme.
Dictating the food choices can have one ultimate counterproductive result: a huge backlash. Outright bans rarely work. A ban on something will usually generate a revolt!
No thanks.
Again the minority wins..... I’m eating more 🍖 🥩
Exactly how have they measured the carbon footprint of everything and everybody at the university? Was it real science or assumption? Let’s be honest how much of a difference will it make to the planet?
Load of cobblers
what twats live in high office
No, it's a cost cutting factor only, meat costs more than plant based foods.
Closing the university would save a lot more.
Cool story bro it stop me eat meat
What a joke lets keep building houses though
An absolute joke. A snowflake decision .
And they say this lot are intelligent ffs
It would be an interesting study - if the whole uni went plant only diet and measured their grades vs pre-plant only baseline. Another one would be to take both Cambridge rowing squads to plant only diet and measuring effect on performance (if any).
No it is forcing people to become vegetarian, where is the freedom going
So the long and short of it is. a) beeb, poor reporting b) Univ Cambridge, appallingly bad science, (or at the v least poor Comm’s) c) public confused yet again by unnecessary crap to fill a byline. Time for press regulation?
why is everyone so triggered by this
DeniseT01 Fracking by Tories set them back
Grass-fed beef and lamb less environmentally damaging than grain-fed chicken and pork [THEY say]. (Why do they feed grain to pigs)
When you go without - from the lack of PROTEIN - who is that going to help ... ? & Therefore deficiency in vitamins ... !!!
No. It’s a back door way of promoting vegetarianism etc
Load of Tosh. The carbon footprint to produce vegan ( and very often highly processed and additive laden) alternatives far outweighs the benefits. Eat less but responsibly reared meat.
All the more for the rest of us!
Wait till Cambridge uni finds out the carbon footprint of all the students flying in and out of the UK to attend.
Not there is a challenge for the university’s Maths Dept - create a positive outcome for minimal input. We all know you can make figures saying anything to support your position - and this is as far-fetched as they come!
vjl2 On the same basis, would removing the current government cut noxious poisons?
when you talk about meat, you mean methane production. But if you're talking about the CO2 emission then factories and industrial sites that are emitting CO2 for free and causing strain on the environmental and health systems should be blamed NOT FOOD
But what about th3 students who want to eat some meat?
Pillocks
And I used to think these people were smart and intelligent with reasonably high IQ's. Going to have the rethink that premiss now.
You would think they would be more discerning and understand that this has no basis in science. Shame on them. In the grip of lefty woke.
Just wondering how many Uni Staff use motorcars to travel into work, who fly abroad for holidays and jaunts , who have a Bar-b-que in the garden where they burn meat (its a british thing) who use their cars to take the kids to..McDs. But hey, they can shout : 'Look at us'
Well done Cambridge.
so students arent even allowed to eat proper food?
....and reduced custom by 99.9999%....
You DO realize that adding meat to our diet way back when is the catalyst that turned us into the humans we are today? The proteins in meat are more effective than plant protein. So unless it’s something guaranteed to kill you, like guns, a total ban may not be a good idea.
Yes because eating less meat is going to negate the billions of tons of CO2 emissions we pump into the atmosphere each year. By all mean it'll help but help in the same way a glass of water would help put out a wildfire.
And what about the carbon footprint of all the overseas students flying to & from home ... oh but of course they generate lots of money
Pathetic. Give people a choice. Forced vegetarianism? Other ways to be environmentally friendly.
We should all eat less meat
People will still pass gas, more so with veggies. So, sure, be counterproductive.
LOL
BBC continue to lose the plot
Eat vegan.
More left wing lunacy from the University's?
Absolute crackpots🤡😂😂😂
