Experts are worried because the Sphinx is looking patchy and has shrunk to four metres in length.

The Sphinx patch of snow in the Cairngorms has survived virtually every summer since records began in the 1700s

The so-called Sphinx in the Cairngorms has survived virtually every summer since records began in the 1700s.Scotland does not have any glaciers but each year a number of hardy patches of snow survive the summer until temperatures drop again in the winter. Some melt fairly frequently but the Sphinx is the most famous, having melted just seven times in the last 300 years.

The Sphinx gets its name from the rock climb above it and can be found in a hollow below the ridge of Braeriach – the UK’s third-highest mountain – in an isolated part of the Cairngorms. Iain and other experts are worried because the Sphinx is looking patchy and has shrunk to four metres in length.
