Manchester United legend George Best once played for a non-league team while he was still contracted to the Red Devils.
When Barry Fry, one of England's most notable lower league managers, took over as head coach at the Bedfordshire club, he asked his long-time friend Best to assist him during pre-season. Both of them had known each other since they were teenagers while training at United, maintaining their friendship thereafter, reports the Mirror.
"I said to Bestie, 'George, I've come to ponce a favour off you - play for Dunstable in two pre-season friendlies'." Best agreed to do it, but told Fry he had to get permission from United as he was still registered as a player at Old Trafford. Best never officially signed for Dunstable, choosing instead to join Stockport County a few weeks later. However, he only made three appearances for the fourth-tier side before moving on to Irish team Cork Celtic.
Fry, on the other hand, achieved promotion to the sixth tier with Dunstable shortly after Best's unexpected cameo, but was let go a few months later following a poor start to the season. He later managed Bedford before settling at Barnet, where he spent 12 of the next 13 years.
