The Emeritus Archbishop of Glasgow Mario Conti has left a lasting legacy across the city he loved - and will be fondly remembered by its people for his compassion, humour and warmth.

In this time, he welcomed Pope Benedict XVI to Glasgow in 2010 during a state visit to the United Kingdom, oversaw the renovation of St Andrew's Cathedral, and the construction of the adjacent Italian Cloister Garden to remember the victims of the wartime Arandora Star tragedy.Parishioner Mary Malley told the Glasgow Times: “He was a great man and I got on very well with him. He cared deeply about people and would go out of his way to help anyone in need.

Cathy Renee attended Archbishop Conti’s funeral on Friday to pay her last respects to a ‘gracious man of god’. He added: “I’m very grateful to him as he did a lot for the Italian community. He was very well respected by everyone and he will be greatly missed.” "When I was appointed Archbishop earlier this year, I found him both gracious and welcoming and full of ideas and suggestions for the future."
