Interest rates up, already spiralling prices set to rise yet further and the prospect of a lengthy recession.
The pair have taken part in a series of televised debates and hustings events, offering themselves up for scrutiny in front of the public and the Tory party members who'll pick between them. Liz Truss claimed the tax levels Rishi Sunak advocates will lead to recession not growth; Rishi Sunak claimed Liz Truss' plan to cut taxes will exacerbate inflation and prolong economic pain.
But in reality all the while this leadership contest plays out, there is a limit to what more the existing government can - or will - do.This week Boris Johnson is on holiday while the current Chancellor, Nadhim Zahawi, is away for a few days with his family, although he is said to be working remotely and taking calls.
They must have enormous egos because I’d rather be on benefits than PM during the next couple of years.
Are any of the Conservatives actually working right now? Are they all on holiday? Now is the time for some hard work trussliz BorisJohnson RishiSunak
Very unlikely considering they've been in government for 12 years
That’s a good call, if they double present grants I’m still £1500 a year short.
As we all know with the Conservatives, these are just words, and when in post they will all go down the leg side, just like their votes!!
THIS PM needs to grapple with the economy! It's happening right now.
Unlikely. They've demonstrated aplenty that they don't want to do anything that may interfere with the great god Market Forces.
Maybe if the current team did something ? BorisJohnson should for one month set tax free pay at £25K and give the voters all a big leaving present. What’s the difference between that and the huge middle class furlough gift
It may have crashed and burned by then.
No sign of the current PM doing something useful until the next muppet steps in 🙄
It’s not that easy. Outside influences beyond UK control are at play here. Not just Russian invasion and grain blockade of Ukraine. Climate change is also taking its toll on food crop growth/failure around the world + fossil fuel industries taking advantage and maximising profits
Why didn’t Sunak grapple with the economy over the last three years that he was chancellor ?
Just out of interest - why isn’t BorisJohnson doing anything about it? I’ve heard a lot of folk saying how good he is at the job - surely he’s not a lame duck!
Sunak has f*cked it up completely as Chancellor. If you are a pensioner you will die this winter by either hypothermia or starvation, cheers RishiSunak
many at bbc who are used to having money raised from licence tax?
Because the current PM is doing sod all.
Lol isn’t that what they were meant to be doing
UK Tories Three BIG lies about the strengths of Conservative Party: -Can be trusted in defending the NHS -Can be trusted in running the economy -Can be trusted on race relations
Biggest crime against humanity to date. ( covid hoax ). This leadership battle, with the help of the propaganda mainstream media is a continuation of lies and deception that will have us all continue as slaves. We must wake up and not let this continue
They have had twelve years to get to grips with the economy under three different prime ministers. So what is a thirteenth year under a fourth pm going to change. Truss/Sunak = no change just more of the same sleazy corruption
Thought KayBurley had a cheek talking about lock down rules after she broke them… also found her to be quite rude as in you asked a question let them answer it!
Am I living in an alternative reality where aliens have landed, and are playing out this awful contest amongst themselves to decide who has a massive influence on our lives.
The Guardian: 'In any case, the killer fact is that 60% of their profits go directly to shareholders: none of that is funding investment in anything, let alone clean energy. Since 2010, they’ve handed out nearly £200bn to shareholders'.
Nationalise the Energy firms otherwise expect a revolution when we will struggle to feed our children.
Think you could stop interviewing moronic Tory party members and actually interview normal working class people who don't want this entire party of scumbags in charge? generalelectionnow
They're both tories.....enough said
Grapple with the mess they’ve created over the last 12 years you mean.
Neither of these clowns nor their party have a clue. Out of touch and incompetent.
Interesting. Sunak hasn’t been able to ‘grapple’ with the economy in his years as chancellor & Truss; well least said the better really. UKLabour LibDems please get your acts together and start opposing this tsunami of BS. jon_trickett FabianLeedsNE Keir_Starmer
Pakistan is now facing most corroupt leaders shahbaz shareef zardrai and there companions are involve3d steal the money and moved to dubi london very shameful for these country leaders who accept the stolen money shame for both countries
Two cheeks, same arse. Election ASAP.
By innovative indulgence in cheese and wine parties , to build back better and clap for themselves
Look at the British candidate, the empire has fallen.
Economic growth, investment, lower tax, lucrative contracts and more Government linkups to backup seeking investment. Being a Government supplier brings the VCs to the barn.
Both candidates support sending asylum seekers to Rwanda. That's a sign that they are both capable of being cruel to human beings and will treat the rest of the country in the same way.
Have no fear; you're in good hands with the ERG!
While ever the illegal migrant's crossing over the economy will suffer U the tax payer has to foot the bill
