Thomas Cook collapse a big threat to Spain's tourist industry

Staff at Thomas Cook's largest subsidiary in Spain say they are the biggest victims of its demise

The economic future of industry workers and staff at Thomas Cook's local suppliers and subsidiaries is at stake. The Spanish Confederation of Hotels and Tourist Accommodation has said that 1.3 million autumn and winter visitors will be unable to fly into Spanish destinations. The first hotel on the islands to close its doors as a result of the impact on tourism was the Fuerteventura Princess, which had an exclusive deal with Thomas Cook covering 95% of its 688 rooms up to 2023. Its 160 staff are to be laid off, a fate to be shared by at least 3,400 others in the sector, according to estimates.

The In Destination Incoming agency, based in Palma, Majorca, went into liquidation days after Thomas Cook ceased operations, reportedly announcing debts of a €57m. After six years of record international tourist arrivals, reaching 82.8 million in 2018, the negative impact from Thomas Cook's collapse may lead to stagnation, with growth up to August reaching only 1.5%, according to government figures.

No sympathy here. I don't remember any Spaniards complaining about Expats homes being demolished due to their own corruption.

And Turkey!

Spain already billions in debt. The EU will have to bail the out, were off.

Maybe those run down seaside towns may get some much needed boost!!!...the return of Butlins and Pontins!!!

Why should we care?

I thought Brexit was the threat

No it's not... other firms will buy the planes and put on more flights. If we want to go to spain we will find a firm who flys to spain !!! scaremongers

Didnt say much when they started new tourist tax did they?

Never put all you eggs in one basket!! 95% of one hotel’s business came from Thomas Cook that’s just stupid on there part.

FYI, there are other travel agents!

Maybe cutting the Spanish tourist tax would help.

Put your prices down for a change,

Does that mean holidays will be cheaper or won’t be cheaper...?

Maybe the spannish might appreciate the tourists a bit more! Since the Euro came in their attitude has totally changed

If the hoteliers knew that the collapse of thomas cook would affect their businesses, they could of reduced there costs temporarily until thomas cook were in a better situation,

On the good side, less plane's less pollution

No way Pedro!

This is last weeks news 🙄

Unlucky!!! 😂😂👏👏👏👏

Surely there is an opportunity for an existing airline to put on more flights to take up some of the slack. The issue is why should they risk it when they can sell what if this winters flights are left at top prices and sell as much as next summers at full price too?

surely they will go to court like normal people if they have debt?

No it's not. There you go, sorted.
