The product of JEB’s challenge to herself to photograph as many different kinds of lesbians as possible,was a direct response to the “totally romanticised, young, white and slim, or totally demonised” images which existed as the sole representation of queer women at the time. The result, even to today’s eye, is a slice of queer utopia.
Part of that ongoing legacy is rewriting the rules of how lesbians are viewed and received in broader society. And while lesbians are a great deal more accepted today than they were 40 years ago, looking at JEB’s portraits in 2021 reminds us of how far we have to go.
