Fiona Kilpatrick-Cooper was just 19 when her fascination with bombs began. Serving in the army as an ammunition technician, she realised she was 'exhilarated' by the risk that comes with disposing of the powerful weapons - and loved enabling people to live without fearing the ground they walked on.
But she also fell in love with the way bomb disposal and clearance can act as an enabler, opening up land to be used for crops and allowing people to walk without fear. Fiona told the M.E.N. she never thought about joining the army growing up, but signed up after going along with two friends who wanted to find out more. She ended up being the only one of the three who joined - a decision that has shaped her career ever since.
Her work has been varied, but she said the project she has become 'famous' for within HALO is her work on a 750 pound aircraft bomb in Laos - simply known as the 'big bomb' within the organisation. "We spent 53 days using over 200,000 filled sandbags to make blast protection walls around the weapon, covering it in sandbags and lots of other technical procedures to make sure that when we destroyed it 20m away from the village, that we didn't also destroy any of the buildings or, or cause any injuries," she continued.
