Six of the seven probable challengers are female, and all will be keen to connect with traditional party supporters

The battle to succeed Jeremy Corbyn and shape the future direction of the Labour party is under way as potential successors set out their leadership stalls for the first time, amid bitter recriminations after the party’s worst general election defeat since 1935.

Jeremy has a cunning plan...Mrs Doubtful has just applied..

If they have any sense, Andy Burnham will enter the race.

Are you sure - it might be a man in a dress? Surely it should be the best person for the job

Wow

Loupoulpe2 renatemargot

We need a metalhead as leader! RichardBurgon 🤘

Going by what I've read here whoever becomes leader will immediately trigger a mass defection of all the hundreds of thousands of people who became members under Corbyn and a return to New Labour times. They too will either lose in 5 years or not change things if they win.

StephenKinnock? Once worked with a Russian, who said he only wanted to work with peers of Kinnock. He had several around him. He didn't want Kinnock 'to get away' from him. Strange. He had thought I was a peer. I wasn't.

Well, they probably couldn't do a worse job if they tried, so congrats to next candidate! Try to, uh, listen to your voters and appeal to them and stuff

Please not Angela or Rebecca.

GreatDismal I'd have thought Keir Starmer was in with a bloody good chance too.

Who fucking cares.

I don't see why it matters?

Most sensible choice: Keir_Starmer Most ballsiest choice: DavidLammy Most appealing choice: jessphillips Most futuristic choice: wesstreeting Most dire choice: Long-Bailey

YvetteCooperMP is head and shoulders above the others. She would hold PhoneSnatcher to account at PMQs and bring UKLabour back to the centrist place of appeal that will win it back enough voters in 2024 or before. The other lot are Corbyn in lipstick.

GreatDismal I'm always impressed that parties do this after an election and not in the lead-up when it might have made a difference.

Of these, only YvetteCooperMP is a leader. The rest are Corbyn in a dress.

GreatDismal About tucking time too!

Jerryfurmanto More to the point, the next Labour leader is likely to be a disaster. This country will have a Tory government for more than five years because the left is incapable of removing its blinkers. All the Labour Party does is keep the Tories in power. Let's get used to it.

Very telling that just like the BBC you have no black people in your perspective leader choices. Says a lot about all of you in our wonderful liberal media.

jessphillips please UKLabour

Yvette Cooper would be the logical choice

The Unelectables.

tomphillipsin Little do they know.... BackBurgon

If this party believes the PC signaling drivel of contemporary dogma is the way forward, my prediction of a rapid bounce back was wrong. It’s the content of character that needs to be the only consideration for leadership

The quality there is frightening. Please please please please make it Angela Rayner. It will be hilarious.

I would put Corbyn again... Just to see what happens...

No, no, no, no, no and er, no

No Dianne?

Labour wants to gain support?! Choose Greta Thunberg! (Yes, she's only 16 however, she has more support, globally, than Jeremy Corbyn)

The next Labour leader should be a person who is best suited and qualified to do a good job. Full stop.

keithbaldrey Please elect Dianne Abbott. 😂

Angela or Rebecca x ⚘❤ solidarity x

Thank God!

I would be deighted with either Phillips or Rayner as deputy leader but Starmer has real credibility and shows a great talent knowing his brief and facing pressure. I just wonder if it may be a bit too soon for JP and AR.

lol at the 1st pic.Mouthy nasty on the right.

One day the country will be run by artificial intelligence. Err, sorry, it already is. None of the above, or below,

I don't care what gender they want to call themselves so long as they can put up an effective opposition and beat the Tories

Jess Phillips all the way

I don't quite understand the high regard some have for her, but, out of these four, surely Yvette Cooper is the clear front runner?

Referencing gender was really the best you could come up with? 🤦🏼‍♀️

As long as it isn't Long-Bailey

Jesus Christ. Nandy is so far above the other three it’s quite ridiculous.

Dear God, first a man, now a woman. Labour is out of ideas.

Likely? All candidates appear to be women unless one or more are feminine ts persons.

Likely to be a marxist

It’s Jess or Kier for me.

Nope. BackBurgon
