I'm being quoted £10,000 for a £1,600 container'

In the UK the difficulties in international shipping have coincided with problems faced by businesses trading with the EU after Brexit.

But some companies can't absorb the skyrocketing freight costs that shipping lines are charging. That could lead to higher prices for consumers or businesses having to close. "It's really hard for a small business to absorb those costs. We'll be making a loss on the goods we're selling."At the other end of the supply chain, Chinese manufacturers and logistics firms say they are equally frustrated.

"To be honest I don't even know how we can survive if we carry on shipping things at this kind of cost."Johnny Tseng says sky-high shipping rates are putting his business at risk. The shortage of empty containers in China and congestion at UK ports caused some of his stock to miss the busy Christmas trading period. Now some customers are holding orders for their Autumn-Winter collections until next year.

Well instead of moaning about the cost of cheap labour where they make the lights and you rip of off people with sky high prices in the uk.....I'm sure there are factories here that could do just as well..no sympathy here

I have been suggesting that some will use Brexit as an excuse and front for profiteerering.

Sadly houseofdotcom this is one of the risks business have to take and should be part of business continuity plans & SWOT analysis when outsourcing or sourcing manufacturing from overseas markets! Think it was perhaps mentioned in the Den am I correct DeborahMeaden dragonjones

If you watch this from 🇺🇸 this not just a 🇬🇧 problem see 2:13 onwards!

It’s greedy people/companies jumping on the bandwagon making lots of money.

Here we go...BBC digging up as much negativity about leaving the EU as possible. So Feckkng boring 🥱

Tax Chinese .... they deserve , and tax freight companies ..... they deserve more or produce locally +protect your innovations against Chinese counterfeit, because this is what they do most of the time

Close the BBC down

EU legislation...

We need to wean ourselves off goods from China.... Where possible...

Source from UK manufacturing then

Then don’t buy from China, source and get lighting made somewhere else. Stop giving them business let’s start making elsewhere. They’ve hiked their prices anyway more punishments from over there

That is overpriced she needs to pick up the phone and ring around. Also transport costs within uk are quite high.

I thought there were too many – That as we don't export, they all get left behind, here?

Less crap from China, not a bad thing in my book.

Are the companies you are buying the lighting from paying their staff a fair wage? £1,600 appears as if they are not! Not sure why we are discussing the container cost when companies like this are keeping the poor poorer.

Oh the joyofBrexit

Bradleyrussel boxinfan ToM_342 some of the replies 😂

Source uk manufacturers.... the obvious solution.

Ah well, fuck China anyway. Stop buying from them.

Buy British. Oh wait, brits dont make anything

About time they invested in a rail system from china, the celts dealt with china 1000s of years ago using land, its about time all those billions they make is invested in a rail system, wouldnt that be better!! Or lets start using are own factories again

More reason to build and buy British

Covid19 has created a shortage of containers through disruption to shipping, as people go sick and crews isolate - but there’s not much anyone can do about it now. Whining (incessantly) is the least effective strategy to all of this. Getting rid of the virus is the most.

Shipping costs from China to the UK went up four fold twelve months ago, this is not a new problem. What has got worse is the congestion at UK ports and the subsequent delays in getting empty containers back to Asia. Not sure why someone can’t just make some more containers.

So the remoaners put down a world wide shipping container shortage down to Brexit .ffs get a life.

Nothing to do with brexit. There is a shortage of containers in the far east, they're all over here, so shippers are cashing in.

Dear Remoaners - please read the article. This has got fuck all to do with Brexit. It’s by the BBC though so your misunderstanding is understandable.

Ffs BBC suddenly hears about intl trade and it doesn't include them..... How will they cope?

So for years you outsourced your business to China at the cost of UK jobs & now your greed has caught up with you. We have offshored all our manufacturing so we can all save a few pennies, the macro economics of this is a poorer population and a nation that isn't self sufficient

Good buy British or go live in China

And we’re all better off Nigel_Farage

Bollocks! China was never part of the EU!.. the new vat regulations might explain it though. One is not necessarily related to the other!

Shame the shippong company or shipper.

Blame all the idiots that voted to leave Europe 😇

Everyone is trying to make some money... 😎

Maybe manufacture in the UK?

Small cost for taking back our borders and freedom sweetheart. BuyBritish

Everything you buy from China breaks anyway ...here's an idea ...let's make our own stuff again!

BBC on the brexit bash.

We imported a shit load of Covid from China absolutely free

My heart bleeds for the Chinese worker being exploited...

Nice one brexit - the political version of punching oneself in the face really, really hard.

You know where to source from now chick 🤷🏼‍♂️

Well that’s just not true is it? She’s being quoted £10k for a £10k container. When the price of potatoes goes up, you don’t say “I’m being quoted £6 for a £1 bag of potatoes”.

imports from China = 90% crap anyway

My mate got quoted £70k for a £25k kitchen extension.

Stop importing cheap shit from a Communist Country then.

Outrageous

Bbc must be searching really hard for anything to smear brexit. A confiscated sandwich last week!

Brexit problems contributing to this ?
