For a decade, Shanahan has kept himself above the fray. Should his job remain secure when he wears the same failures as the coach?

In firing Sheldon Keefe as head coach on Thursday morning, the made it clear that winning one round in five postseasons isn’t good enough. Which is fair enough. But now the attention will almost certainly turn to the person at the top of the organization, team president Brendan Shanahan, who has been around twice as long – 10 seasons – and has just that one playoff-round victory himself. The most problematic aspect of Shanahan’s vision, however, has been his unwillingness to tweak the plan when playoff results demanded it. An unwavering faith in the five-pack of Matthews, Marner, Nylander, and helped the Leafs pile up wins in the regular season but backfired when that star power didn’t shine through when it mattered. “Those are very unique players and hard players to get,” Shanahan said after the 2021 playoffs, which saw the Leafs blow a 3-1 series lead to heavy underdog .
