The Scottish Government ’s reported move to scrap a key 2030 climate target has been met with rage by environmental campaigners.
Eco charity Friends of the Earth raged it would be “worst environmental decision in the history of the Scottish Parliament”, while Oxfam Scotland said it was the consequence of SNP-Green ministers “dilly-dallying” on climate action. Friends of the Earth Scotland’s head of campaigns Imogen Dow said: “If the SNP and Green Ministers choose to scrap these vital climate commitments, it would be the worst environmental decision in the history of the Scottish Parliament.
Scots catholic aid charity SCIAF said that with the climate crisis bringing mounting misery to countries on the frontline such as in Africa, Scotland failing to hit its targets would be “playing our part in making this planet hell on earth”. And Laurie Macfarlane, co-director of the Future Economy Scotland think tank, said: “The Scottish Government’s decision to abandon its 2030 emissions reduction target is disappointing – but unsurprising.
Speaking ahead of her statement today, McAllan said that taking action to tackle the twin crises of climate change and nature loss is the "defining global issue of our era".
