Shackled skeleton find 'evidence of Roman slavery'

The discovery of a skeleton secured at the ankles with a locked set of iron fetters is thought to be evidence of slavery in Roman Britain, experts have said.Archaeologists said it was the first uncovering of a burial wearing this form of restraint from that era.Archaeologists from MOLA were brought in to "expose, record and analyse" the skeleton of an adult male following its discovery in 2015.

The "awkward" burial position implied he was buried informally in a ditch rather than a proper grave, "perhaps as a conscious effort to separate or distinguish them" from those buried at a Roman cemetery about 60m away.

However it said shackles were "very rarely" found with human remains, adding this was the first discovery from Roman Britain of a man wearing lockable ankle fetters.

Oh BBC evidence of Roman slavery ?, the highly 'educated' elites of BBC news have just caught on that The Roman Empire had slaves. This is Britain's broadcaster for you.

Bloody Romans, pull all their statues down and get them to pay reparations!!!

Let's tear up all the Roman roads.

I want to be paid compensation for what these Romans did.

The social studies teacher at that time has already passed away. Amen

BBCWorld Did anyone need more evidence that Romans had slaves?

Of course the Romans had slaves......you could have just watched Spartacus to find that out....

BBCWorld Are people in the comments genuinely equating roman slavery with the transatlantic slave trade?

Of course they had slaves you learn this at school. The Romans took Britons to Rome to show off their conquest, Germans and Gaul too. This has been written about since ancient times. Vikings had them too. Nothing new to see here.
