Thousands of women are being released from prison each year without adequate help, a group of MPs and peers say.
This time, she's in accommodation run by a charity called Housing for Women. Letitia says without it, she would "absolutely" be on the streets again. In January, the government announced £70 million to keep prison leavers off the streets, including £20 million for a new accommodation service that will house former prisoners for up to 12 weeks.
"A lack of safe, supported and permanent accommodation puts vulnerable women at risk and makes it near impossible for them to turn their lives around", the MPs' letter says.
You’ve normally got to have done something pretty awful to go to prison as a woman. £45 too much imho.
So give them £1000, see how that works out.
Do the men get more or is this just another shitty bbc feminist story about the poor wee put upon wimminz?
So what so are men
That's ensuring success...
We genuinely do need better post prison support to avoid re-offending. Simples.
And men
Plastic bags are harmful to the environment
Shit I guess when I got out I became rich because according to this shit, only women get out and almost become homeless. I had to work my ass off to get back on my feet I also sold my DBZ collection for rent fuck this shit saying it’s only women.
People should really think of if the current punishment policy is good for the society; the policy is making people useless, or, they should never go back to the society.
As opposed to men who get £500 and two plastic bags 🤷♂️
Is 20p deducted for the plastic bag?
How much is pitchfork getting when he is released
Illegal immigrants get a house and money - amazing country we live in
Criminality is a vicious circle. Commit a crime, go to prison, get kicked onto the streets with no support, go back to criminality. Prison isn't just about punishment, it's about rehabilitation
'we're women, give us loads of free stuff and special treatment'
So what! Why reward them for wrong doing!
Well why should they be prioritised housing? Why reward wrong doing!
Thousands £46 so how many thousand are there? ONE THOUSAND IS A DRAIN OF £46,000
Plastic bag? What I wouldn’t give for a plastic bag!
🙄😆What do you expect?
Some people can only dream of having £46 and a plastic bag.
They did the crime. Why feel sorry for them.
Maybe don't end up in prison?
The usual empathetic views in replies I see. No one should be homeless. But if you'd like to understand the additional challenges women face while homeless, perhaps start with this recent BigIssue article:
Maybe they shouldn’t commit a crime ? Surely we should treat people regardless of gender ? Why single out women ?
Women wanted equality , got it but still unhappy. Nothing new.
I hope they charged them 20p for the plastic bag
Do they expect a ferrari. They are criminals.
The cost of plastic bags has gone up 🤷
All the men in these comments saying what about men lol this is about women, they always seem to make it about themselves!
Be a law abiding citizen then problem resolved.
SkyNews Channel4News itvnews That is inhumane!
Maybe if they hadn't offended in the first place this wouldn't be an issue
Broken system for a broken public by broken politicians.
Is it a bag for life tho?
Probably more than they walked in with
This is just cruelty. Once they run out of money they become totally vulnerable to exploitation. How can a rich country treat women like this? Why?
Why are they given anything? It's not the tax payers fault they ended up behind bars!
So women criminals should be a priority for getting housing?
BBCPolitics Is it different for men? Heres an idea......get a job and don't commit crime?
I suppose men walk out with a Rolex and leather briefcase ?
And they say crime doesn’t pay
And men ?
How much are male prisoners released with?
Thousands of people. Men don't get given a detached house and 20k in the bank.
While men get a couple of gold bars and a holiday in Barbados....Prison is sexist!
Same as men. Also, don't break the law, stupid.
Been released many times in the past and yeah that’s all prisoners ! What’s all this about then🧐
callum_may insane how obvious it is that there needs to be a properly funded post-prison support infrastructure. Quickest way for offenders to re-offend is stuff like this.
Is it a bag for lifers?
Tell the whole truth
Maybe they should of thought about not committing crime in the first place to be in that position. Decent people dont break the law .no sympathy when it's there own doing
Like men are
And men don't!
