The Scottish Government is facing criticism for breaking the Bute House Agreement by announcing a council tax freeze without consulting the Green Group. The decision has damaged trust and undermined attempts to treat local government with respect. The Scottish Government is urged to ensure that this is not repeated.

The motion states that the council tax freeze decision “broke the Bute House Agreement’s commitment to ‘consultation and collaboration with the Green Group throughout the development and scrutiny of all stages of the annual budget process’.

“Conference believes that local taxation should be decided by democratically elected local government, and that failure to respect this damages trust and completely undermines attempts to treat local government with greater respect. The motion, which passed at 64%, calls on the Scottish Government to make a commitment to ensure that the way in which the proposed council tax freeze was handled “is never repeated”.The amendment failed, with Scottish Greens co-leader Lorna Slater warning that if passed, it would “lead to the end of the Bute House Agreement”.

Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
