"It's unthinkable that young women could be forced to miss days of their education simply because they can't access or afford period products," said education minister Kirsty Williams.
"We're committed to tackling this inequality in Wales and this funding will help make period products available to learners in all schools, free of charge and in the most dignified way possible."The move is aimed at tackling"period poverty" - where women and girls cannot afford sanitary products The move was welcomed by Hilary Beach, who has campaigned on the issue in Chepstow, where she is a town councillor."There's a certain amount of period poverty in Monmouthshire," the town councillor said.
She said some young women's education suffers"because they are not able to fully participate when they have got their periods," she said.Last year £700,000 was provided to boost school toilet facilities, and £440,000 to allow councils to provide products through schools, food banks and shelters to those who otherwise may struggle to afford them.
A great start...now for the rest of the country...
I'm so jelly khlee_28
Oh really! Why don't they supply panties as well?
The Wamen at the BBC take a bow....I know none of you have vaginas that go anywhere, but what a difference you have made to females. In response to the emancipation of the 1960s you have managed to turn females into aloof, unapproachable victims.
Not free to the taxpayers paying for them . This country has gone mad !
Great ideas should bring this into Ireland girlpower
Brilliant!
Plenty of anti welsh and anti welsh females having periods!! I pay tax my husband pays tax and we are happy for a teeny tiny part of our tax contribution to go towards this!! Well done Wales 🏴
This is a step in the right direction that is long overdue. However, it would be so much eco, if those supplying these products would be educated to offer & educate those receiving feminine hygiene products that there are eco alternatives as well such as moon cups + reusable STs
scotland on another level. i’m so sorry y’all didn’t get independence 💆🏽♀️
FCKIN HELL WHEN WILL WE ALL
Even ones who have moved to England ?
So the Welsh must fund the fanny rags AND the BBC? No difference there then.
This should be available in all school. No child should have to struggle.
I love how men are fine with secondry schools and colleges giving out free condoms but free sanitary products is going way to far.
Quite right too. we pay millions of pounds in aid outside the UK each year, to places such as India who spend vast sums on Space and Lunar exploration at the expense of their own people... Lets look after our own girls for a change.
I think its a great idea, especially for those girls from families who cannot afford decent sanitary items! It will now give those young girls in education the confidence to be able to enjoy school, and not feel self-conscious or embarrassed at those times of the month!
Good news for those that are struggling. Can't believe there's people out there that begrudge young girls being helped out with basic hygiene products, especially those coming from homes that are struggling financially or aren't being looked after by their parent/guardians.
I don't understand why all of the UK can't have free sanitary products?! Well done Wales! endperiodpoverty
Great news 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Wales will soon be like Scotland . Will there be anything that is not free no doubt paid for by the average English taxpayer who is being taxed to the teeth.
Primary School is always asking for donations of TISSUES for kids colds!!😡😡😡😡😡😡😡
Not selling condoms to use on the sheep? Obviously not Welsh...
when will WE be getting free holidays I need one im feeling down and cant afford one ohh and free sweets please COME ON WHATS CHILD SUPPORT FOR . BET THEY HAVE NICE PHONES
What about English schools
I think that’s a great move! Why only Wales ? Do the rest of the U.K. ‘s kids not have periods?
Brilliant idea indeed, thank heavens the English tax payers can afford it.
Even the all boys schools?
Don’t they get free prescriptions aswell, while we have to pay 😡
About time! ⏰
This is fantastic endperiodpoverty
And people, wonder why Wales is skint.
More than 141,000 girls in all Welsh primary and secondary schools will be given access to free sanitary products under Welsh Government plans. NewJerseyDOE FirstLadyNJ njsba NJEA NJPTA njsba NJPSA NJDHS NPR starledger njspotlight VanityFair
I don't know why people are negative about this (though it's funny how it seems to be men). It's a great start.
Why?
Interesting that people don’t have a problem with “their taxpayer money” going towards the free toilet paper and soap that children already get. But sanitary products that are also a necessity is going too far
Free condoms in the boys toilets? 🤷♂️
And razors for boys
Those poor Welsh girl will now have to put up with being relentlessly teased by the boys ! Because boys will be boys - something's never change
Good on the Welsh! Not just great rugby players and singers, but compassionate forward thinkers also!
Isn't this their parents' responsibility? Will taxpayers be expected to buy them clothes and shoes next... or free haircuts, maybe?
No such thing as free, the money comes from your taxes
They won’t be free someone will be paying and I think I know who
Who,s boots are those shoes? Who,s flannel is that Tampon?
The Basic Sanitary Products should be free to Women, after all, it's not as if they chose to go through what they do, it's something forced on them & as such, there should be a level of free product, then there should be restrictions on the prices charged as to what Women require
I don't get this. We always had sanitary products in our school & just went to the office if needed anything & I left school well over 20 yrs ago. Why is it so crap now
Since the crazy leftist feminists are assuring us that boys can have periods too, why aren't these supplies being handed out to boys as well?
Free rags? Fair enough, they are washable and Ecco friendly. Giving them free pads or tampons though... they are people’s inventions and should not be free (they aren’t, someone is paying). If women want free sanitary products then use tea towels! 4 for £1 at Poundland + reusable
Fantastic news, let’s get it implemented in England too!
All sanitary products should be free to every female, women don’t choose to have a period. Sanitary products are only luxuries if you live in a third world country, apparently we live in one of the richest countries in the world yet we have period poverty 🤷🏻♀️
So do the girls at Elland Road lufctrust LUFC. Fantastic work by the trust and Leeds Utd
BetterThanBrexit this should go right across the UK . And for women who can not afford these.
That’s a bit sexist, what are the boys getting free ?
What, even the all boys schools
Looks like news for catherinerusse2 !
Won't be those expensive brands though
But not boys! everyday sexism by leftards
Expect the usual response from the usual misery guts types. Great work! WelshLabour !!!
....and also a free Quran very soon.
Thought schools were a place of learning not a shop
