FORMER Health Secretary Sajid Javid has called for wealthier patients to pay a “modest” fee to visit A&E or their GP. The high-profile Tory MP, 53, said making Brits pay to visit hospital emerg…

The Bromsgrove MP told The Times last night he wanted to start a “hard-headed conversation” about the future of the health service - warning its core principles “cannot survive much longer” without reform.

The ex-Cabinet minister, who will stand down as an MP at the next election, also called on Health Secretaryto extend “the contributory principle” - with wealthier health care patients asked to chip in with a “modest” health care fee. He had previously proposed fining patients for missing GP appointments during his short Conservative leadership campaign last July.

How would they distinguish who is to pay? Migrants on visa’s pay NHS surcharge of over £1,500 to be able to use the service.

And so it begins, the first muttering of privatising the nhs.

The rich playing for the poor shouldn't be mandatory

I wonder why?

What do they mean by wealthier patients? It's the start of a very slippery slope.

Knob

The Tory scam: Step 1: Invest in private health providers. Step 2: Abolish the principle of free at the point of use. Step 3: Privatise the NHS and watch your share values soar. Step 4: Sell your shares and laugh all the way to the bank. That's the Tory way.

How wealthy is wealthy

sajidjavid if they have paid their taxes they are entitled to it. How about we stop giving it to free to people from other places. Oh and how about the government pay their taxes.

Let go privately

So he wants people to pay NI, their existing AXA/BUPA private insurance,AND to pay for A&E/GPs? Nah, that's double dipping. Ridiculous.

What pay for a 28 hour wait for an ambulance, I don't think so.

Happy to pay, assume that means by paying an additional fee as well as higher NI contributions we will get seen first and receive premium care 👍🏻 because it is so fair that those working to be in a better position financially should be penalised for it 🫣

They’re already paying more tax but you want them to pay more for a service that needs drastic reform before more money is pumped in.

'Means Testing'........it's the only solution, both in the UK and U.S. My millionaire sister gets a free knee replacement, so does my neighbor on snap/food stamps/fuel assistance/medicaid.....the system can't survive like it is now.

Tories don't pay their Taxes let alone pay medical fees so it's rubbish!

I agree, they should

Or just increase tax for the wealthier to help fund it for the poor. Just a suggestion

He is saying this now even thoe we all ready pay high taxes for these services. wat is it really for so he can skim more money for his tax his just payed out for. He as to recuperate his money back somehow

Why shouldn’t millionaires like Keir_Starmer RishiSunak pay to see doctors?

Bleeding out, does one still need to drag an accountant with us? The hospital may wish to know where to send the bill.

We already do it’s called national insurance, u bellend

Rediculous

Who will help me financially in Ukraine?

How about everyone pays a small fee to make a appointment and refunded when attended, that would stop the abusers and allow genuine patents to use the system, fed up with my doc's list of missed appointments for wk to wk and month end, so wrong.

People with money go to private consultations all the time. They avoid the NHS as they don't have time to waste feeling ill.

Don't they already pay?

Does this mean tax cuts? Wealthy people already pay more tax. Unless you're a tax dodging tory like nadhimzahawi

Bellend

So the NHS GPs prioritise the rich and the rest get shoved to the back of the que ! Let the Rich pay for new GPs not existing NHS . This will not resolve the situation it will make the current problems worse. Common sense ! But sense is not so common !

Lol, they should pay a fee to spend 10 hours waiting to be seen at A&E or wait up to 3 days to get an appointment at the GP. Sounds like a good deal 😂

Patients should be charged for GP appointments and A&E visits to ease waits, Sajid Javid saysThe former health secretary has suggested the NHS should swap hefty waiting times with means-tested fees, looking to countries including Ireland, Norway and Sweden as possible models. 🤡🤡🤡 That will lead to easing alright as many people will not be able to afford to ho on top of all their other costs. These 🤡 s are too out of touch 😒 And so it begins... Tory destroy the NHS, and slowly but surely start charging for everything

Inequalities in children’s mental health care: analysis of routinely collected data on prescribing and referrals to secondary care - BMC PsychiatryBackground One in eight children in the United Kingdom are estimated to have a mental health condition, and many do not receive support or treatment. The COVID-19 pandemic has negatively impacted mental health and disrupted the delivery of care. Prevalence of poor mental health is not evenly distributed across age groups, by sex or socioeconomic groups. Equity in access to mental health care is a policy priority but detailed socio-demographic trends are relatively under-researched. Methods We analysed records for all mental health prescriptions and referrals to specialist mental health outpatient care between the years of 2015 and 2021 for children aged 2 to 17 years in a single NHS Scotland health board region. We analysed trends in prescribing, referrals, and acceptance to out-patient treatment over time, and measured differences in treatment and service use rates by age, sex, and area deprivation. Results We identified 18,732 children with 178,657 mental health prescriptions and 21,874 referrals to specialist outpatient care. Prescriptions increased by 59% over the study period. Boys received double the prescriptions of girls and the rate of prescribing in the most deprived areas was double that in the least deprived. Mean age at first mental health prescription was almost 1 year younger in the most deprived areas than in the least. Referrals increased 9% overall. Initially, boys and girls both had an annual referral rate of 2.7 per 1000, but this fell 6% for boys and rose 25% for girls. Referral rate for the youngest decreased 67% but increased 21% for the oldest. The proportion of rejected referrals increased steeply since 2020 from 17 to 30%. The proportion of accepted referrals that were for girls rose to 62% and the mean age increased 1.5 years. Conclusions The large increase in mental health prescribing and changes in referrals to specialist outpatient care aligns with emerging evidence of increasing poor mental health, particularly since the start of the C
