reducing packaging should be the priority for retailers, rather than replacing plastic with compostable or recyclable alternatives.
Instead customers will be invited to bring their own bags, buy reusable bags made from recycled plastic bottles, or put a price sticker onto loose items. The supermarket considered introducing paper bags, but spokeswoman, Rebecca Reilly said the net impact would have been worse for the environment. But Helen Bird from packaging campaign group, Wrap, said plastic milk bottles were one of the items being widely recycled in the UK.
Not good enough. Steal a march on competition and do it now. We all say we care about the environment but are not really prepared to do what's necessary
Good on Sainsbury’s, ignore what is best for the environment for a perceived short term customer gain. Bad long term decision. Vice la share holders :-(
Products are getting smaller each year so by 2025 will be 25% smaller so they won’t do anything
Why halve it. Scrap it altogether. And why on earth would it take 6 years? If the process would double their profits, they would have it done in 6 minutes. nicegesture
Good to see but way too slow, why do they think people will be impressed by this level of commitment? What are Sainsburys or any other company for that matter restricted by?
Greenwash. Different types of plastic, alone or together in laminate structures, are currently necessary to preserve most food and to guarantee shelf life and thereby help to reduce food waste.
Halve? The majority of it is pointless anyway. Fruit and veg have skins for a reason, as an example.
I will shop with the supermarket that does this the fastest. How about some eco competition between them. The winner gets our business.
Not soon enough
Pretty pathetic really
“removing all plastic bags from its fruit and veg sections by the end of this month” - been waiting for this for ages, definitely a step in the right direction!
Halve? In six years, nowhere near enough!
Why is it taking them so long?
This is not a new pledge - same old greenwash sainsburys trot out every time customers question their commitment. And halve? That's not enough by half. Greenpeace
It’s simple. Sell fruit and veg loose tomorrow.
paper
Just sell fruit and veg loose like the old days stop prepacked rubbish
How can they get a litre of milk in a 500ml container.
6 yrs to halve it you got to be joking. Shame on you. Or is it fck it we won't be around to suffer the consequences.
Not soon enough sainsburys
It takes 5 years to quit plastic?
They don’t need to put anything in plastic for me. I drive past to get to Asda.
Need to pledge to make more packaging recyclable in mean time ♻
Why can’t people in this country cut up their own veg? Supermarkets put orange segments in plastic containers. It literally takes a few seconds to peel a bloody orange. plasticpollution
This is a start, sainsburys but too little and too slow. Cut it by 100% would be better.
Sainsbury’s have bigger problems. Like why do you close your cake counter at 5pm? Are only jobless allowed to experience your cakes ?
Hopefully they switch from plastic bottles to glass bottles.
Eliminate it sooner.
Oooooooooooo
Pathetic response.
Why 2025? It should be 2021
By halving their sales hopefully. The singing boss is running them into the ground. He should have gone after his failed merger debacle. sainsburys SainsburysNews
Unacceptable
As long as the packaging isn’t something stupid I’m on board
Who gives a shit. They could do it tomorrow if it really matters.
