Richard Branson's bailout plea proves there's no one more shameless | Marina Hyde

Motorboating enthusiast Richard Branson is playing a particularly idiosyncratic game of Monopoly. He would like to mortgage his private Caribbean island. In return, you, the taxpayer, have to buy him Mayfair and Park Lane, all the greens, all the yellows, all the reds, and stick a hotel on every one of them. Also, if Richard lands on Super Tax or Income Tax he doesn’t pay them. And if he gets the Community Chest saying “pay hospital fees”, he refuses and sues the hospital.

He’s already invested in and built a successful business once. If its ruined by Covid why the hell should he sacrifice / risk his wealth to protect other people? the majority of people around the world are as selfish as me and the rest of the tweeters on here.

We'd need a draconian 'covid tax' from the bottom up - but not quite to the very top - to prop up these risk-taking chancers. At least that's what it'll be called, a tax. Even though it'll be 20+ years lost in deep austerity on steroids. We could just offer a polite 'fuck off!'

Those who pay no tax are always full of recommendations on how it should be spent..

He doesn’t need the money. The VAA employees need it. If the airline goes bust he will go and play space rockets, most of the 8500 employees will be looking for an income to pay bills.

He gives the impression that he still owns Virgin Atlantic but he sold over 90% of it to Delta and Air France. With most things bearing the Virgin name he acts as if they are his even if they he has sold all his shares in them.
