The Labour leadership contender Rebecca Long-Bailey has said she wants to abolish the House of Lords and would not stand in the way of another Scottish independence referendum.
She won't get the leadership. If she does, it's Tories forever.
Clive of India must be turning over in his grave. What is next? Reparations for the descendants of weavers in India who had their thumbs broken? Just not cricket.
A parallel to changing the electoral college system in the US?Does it make for a less or more consolidated society?
Makes sense to me
Oooh yes, good at selling groceries? You can legislate and adjudicate law! Written some catchy showtunes (largely stolen from classics)? You're qualified to make laws! Given blowjobs to a 17th century royal? You're more than qualified!
A second chamber is useful to scrutinise legislation. A fully elected one is just irritating with arguments but one fully dependent on the commons votes possibly could work. There is a lot of expertise in the crossbench we would lose
Glad to see RLB is concentrating on the key issues at the forefront of the lives of the electorate. A sure-fire winner
Definitely requires reform, but not abolition. It’s an important check and balance mechanism that protects against the tyranny of the majority, and is therefore a crucial aspect of our democracy.
Ohhhh that's the face of a woman who wants to speak to the manager right there
How have the elected representatives done so far? Allowed a referendum based on lies & more lies voted upon by people who had no idea what the EU was & elected someone they consider superior to them. The Lords represent mostly people groomed for duty & Britain's best interests.
She's got my vote.
No need for a house of lords. Elected MPs are enough.
So do I soon as
Looks like she’s more likely to abolish the Labour Party.
Good luck. Your saying no to lords is like saying no to taxes. Get rid of one the other will follow. Good luck.
The problem of abolishing the Lords is that is decreases the amount of scrutiny legislation gets and increases the power of the executive. Reforming the Lords is a better way forward.
that is 2 good policies for a start. I hope she wins it
At least 20 years out of power
Gets my vote just for that. It’s out of date and should go.
Totally agree. A fully elected second house is the only possible option in a democracy that wants to be taken seriously.
She's correct to. Giving people power over law-making should be done on merit alone, and reviewed regularly.
And this will help the very wet homeless guy I just bought coffee for in Stroud how exactly?! The lurch to the left has not helped anyone and won’t again. Ideology doesn’t put food in bellies.
That's most of us the left and right
How about concentrating on what matters to the people of Britain, not that high on the list of priorities, you’ll find.
Oh the horror!
What will become of Hephaestos? Will he just be a regular blacksmith?
Makes 100% sense... house of lords (sic!) is a relic of the middle ages carried over from Magnum Concillium that used to advise the king... in fact, it is high time to remove the titular head (queen of England) who is a drain tax payers.
cult
I support
Lord Sugar will be chucking Amstrad emailers all over the place when he hears this
We do need some experts in Parliament to review and have time to amend Bills though, as well as a mixture of people who have gained respect in their careers, with some real knowledge. The trouble is they will all be old as younger ones at work in their jobs. Peers out though.
It definitely needs shrinking as it is growing unsustainably. Needs a cap in numbers.
Don't abolish. Reform. Get rid of hereditary titles, limit 'lifetime' terms to 15 years, clear out those with poor attendance, restrict political appointments. But don't get rid of a vital restraint on the Commons.
No one gives a sh*t. Just like free broadband. Focus on things that matter or you’ll continue to be irrelevant to voters
She has a tiny little mouth.
Abolish the labour party whilst your at it....
Well another MP who exaggerates her CV
Yeah so a base federal tax and a regional tax for regional interests. A bit like Switzerland.
Blair abolished it in '99. The Lords were hereditary. All we have now is a room full of cronies.
Cant disagree there. Its meant to be a place where the UK's best in field are seated. Instead we have got Ian Duncan Smith and people who have sucked off a past PM in some way. Reform and have a proper 2nd chamber
Make her a baroness.
If you’re a democrat seems reasonable right
Hardly an issue that the ex-Labour supporters that abandoned the party actually care about. Proper head in the sand job this
This is a ‘ how not to ‘ by RLB
Adam Schiff is for sale... He could be your salvation.
Labour wanted to do this for a century-including Blair-Suddenly uninterested at the merest sniff of power.
Why does this Party learn absolutely nothing from its mistakes? Do they not see why they lose all the time?
