Classes resume for some pupils in England but half of parents might not send in their children, surveys suggest

For some parents the decision has been taken out of their hands. Lancashire County Council is among those saying it is not yet safe to open schools.

Ministers say opening schools will help with childcare for parents returning to work - and to help children catch up with missed lessons. Parents have complained about the complications of juggling work and childcare, including those with jobs in schools. On the Workingmums.co.uk website Kerry from Middlesex says she works for two hours a day at lunchtimes in a school that is now reopening.

Nurseries and early years' providers are also opening, and a survey of 4,500 parents with young children, carried out by the Early Years Alliance, indicated a divided picture on take-up.45% of parents are planning to take up placesChief executive Neil Leitch warned the row over the prime minister's adviserClassrooms have been rearranged to ensure more distance between pupils

There have always been stupid parents. There have always been reactionary parent. Both sets produce stupid, reactionary kids and that’s the crying shame.

Don’t hold your children’s education back by keeping them at home. If you think it’s unsafe, just be glad your children don’t go to a school in a country that’s being bombed

Why are you having so called specialist on the news who obviously dont have a clue what they are talking about you let them say 8000 new cases a day but dont question this figure when governments figures are less than 2000 so why are you allowing false facts to be read out

And why did we need a survey? Just bloody count them. Or do schools not know how many children they have attending? It’s called registration.

Our school emailed opening telling us a teacher had a voluntary test and was positive. Asymtomatic. She’d been teaching key worker kids. Hardly anyone in back then but still spread. If not volunteer test she’d be back teaching other kids today.

Not me my year 6 child isnt allowed, only key workers children are allowed

It seems they are only taking children in years rec year year 6 if parents are key workers, well my daughters school is

Parents condemning their children to Job Centres because they lack education ?

Well done the schools that are open. Shame on the left for preventing better compliance.

Then the children who do not attend will miss out on key early years learning.

Well making your own choice and trusting your instincts are what the govt say you should do so good on the parents who are not happy that it is safe

Sending state kids back to classrooms whilst an unknown highly contagious deadly SARS virus is eating its way through humanity! What could possibly go wrong?

night Just walked my 8 year old to school. He skipped in, without a second glance :)

I hope none send them in if it can be helped.

When the posh kids go back to the privately run schools I will send mine back, not a day earlier... So see you in August maybe!

Mine won't be going back until we are sure it's safe. Not convinced at the moment.

night including William & Kate it appears, sensible

However, they’ll happily take them to the beach and let them play out with friends.

night Is Dominic Cummings’ child at school today?

It would be safer for kids to visit JefferyEpstein’s island in 2001 than to start back at school today. JefferyEpsteinFilthyRich

Bloody irresponsible decision!! What about the teachers like my wife?! Government haven’t organised PPE for staff! Why?! Viruses spread like wild fire in schools - children will be carriers. Pass on to adult teachers who then take home to families inc vulnerable people! crazy

Lots of 'holier than thou' comments on here. Easy to judge parents who are simply trying to do their best by their kids, by sending them back. Cheap shots all over the place. Do you want a new generation scared of it's own shadow?

В это тяжело поверить

Help with keeping 2m space

It is not safe to open schools yet. Especially with so many new cases of the coronavirus being reported each day. BorisJohnson MattHancock Cummings are entirely wrong!

if one of these smiley innocent faces is endangered by the greed of the nasty party and the piggy investor, then someone must answer the charges that will be made by the UK people.

I’m sure they’ll have a great time.

Probably the same parents that take them to the beach

Without clear rules, people are going back to normal. Yesterday, I saw a driving lesson taking place (not even masks being used!), lots of kids playing in a “closed” playground and a park full of friends meeting up with zero social distancing. I’m scared there will be a 2nd wave

Half of parents watch fear scaremongering BBC

Well done to the schools opening today. Shame on those schools and councils who are refusing to open, who are jeopardising the futures of many young lives.

So they can take them to beaches and protests but not school

The majority of parents are happy for them to go back

So half will?

To live in fear is no life at all. With no working vaccine it makes no difference if they go back now, 3 months, 2yrs from now. Pointless destroying Kids futures because the MsM has drowned you in fear. Sad as it will be if any life is lost, life must go on with/without a vaccine

Why bother sending them now, it’s Summer, let them be safe at home. It can all begin again in Autumn.

Baffled by the Liverpool couple on BBC NEWS. Dreadful they lost their Dad but wanting a Govt enquiry cos their dad attended the Ath Madrid game at Anfield is absurd. It was raging then, I watched the game, never caught it cos I watched all on TV. Nobody HAS to go to a game!!

I wouldn't send mine but I also wouldn't take them to packed beaches, parks etc....

We have to fight against social distancing in schools with all we have. We instinctively know it will be so harmful for our children and will have no, or almost no, benefit. DO NOT ACCEPT SOCIAL DISTANCING IN YOUR CHILD'S SCHOOL

Who would blame them....the government are not following the science imo & many others feel the same.

Well the ones that do go back will have an advantage then, time to send them all back.

My local academy trust has 200 pupils in today from the normal almost 2000. Think that speaks for itself!

You're clearly not seeing the 'bigger picture'.... govt can't afford furloughing any more... people have to die...er.... get back to 'normal'... er.... do whatever... A few vulnerable and elderly deaths.... probably saves money, eh!! LambsToTheSlaughter

It's the fear of what the children can bring home to parents.

Wish mine could go back....not coping well at the minute!

But parents will happily take their kids to a packed beach, or leave kids at gome to take part in protests then potentially pick up and take the virus home

Glad parents are taking their own decision for their own families and not listening to the clowns running this country

Left wing socialists whipped up by their unions. The rot in our education system is rife all the way to university.

If we were being led by the science they wouldn't be going back until we have a proven track and trace program set up and the R was consistently under 1

Donald Trump was taken to an underground bunker during protests over the death of GeorgeFloyd

Nope, mine won't be. All 75 of them will be staying at their homes.

Ministers changed plans to reopen schools 41 times, says union chief'Too soon' to reopen primary schools on Monday, warns NEU They are beyond useless So what? I've worked on projects where the layout of a school has changed almost as many times. Reviewing, feedback and adapting is a good thing. 'Accused of making it up as they go along'... Pretty everyone is at the moment 😂 The govt. hasn't a clue. Schools will just have to ignore the, consult with parents and teachers and use common sense according to local circumstances. No decision will please everybody. In most cases the majority will be right but tolerance and empathy is needed as well.
