Rishi Sunak has distanced himself from Ben Wallace’s suggestion that Ukraine could show more “gratitude” to the West, insisting that President Volodymyr Zelensky has done so “on a number of occasions” poppyeh reports

John Healey, the shadow Defence Secretary, said Ukraine did not need “lectures on gratitude” in the grips of a Russian invasion.

Jake Sullivan, the US National Security Adviser, echoed Mr Wallace’s comments about “gratitude” as he slapped down suggestions the US helped water down Nato’s position on Ukraine. It comes after President Zelensky launched a surprise tirade on Tuesday, saying there seemed to be “no readiness” toHe called for Nato leaders to provide a more concrete commitment to welcome Ukraine as a member once the war with Russia is over, after a joint communiqué signed by allies said they would “support” the country “in making reforms on its path towards future membership”.
