It’s a good time to step up. I understand some people might be hesitant to speak out about race when it’s not their space or passion. You don’t want to feel like you’re getting it wrong.. And now with social media, even if you stand firm in the knowledge that what you are saying is right, you can still find yourself worrying about the risk of criticism and backlash. We’re getting a lot of reactionary emotion right now.
I think this is partly happening because life is not moving at its usual rapid pace — even if a lot of executives are busier, working harder from home than they ever did when they were at the office. We are all house-bound on our screens and we have that visual of George Floyd in our heads now. We watched it happen. People see the gravity of the situation and the realisation hits that something needs to change.
The reason why I’ve always advocated for models of colour is because I know it can impact everyone’s psyche. I was looking at the bigger picture. I knew that if the public could get used to the image of the person of colour, they could get used to the idea of the person of colour in life in general. And this is work that I did over the course of decades.
