Pensioner in £193,000 inheritance battle after sort code error

Peter Teich and Ms Becko say they felt 'numb' after almost losing £193,000 worth of inheritancePeter Teich, 74, from Cambridge gave his solicitor the wrong sort code and the money was mistakenly transferred to another Barclays customers account, who refused to return it.But he realised there was an issue when his sister received her inheritance and he did not.

He said he had given his correct name, address and Barclays account number in Cambridge to his solicitor, but the last two digits of his sort code were incorrect. When Mr Teich asked the bank to repay the £46,000 he had spent in legal fees, he claims Barclays refused.that the bank agreed to pay the fees and offer a further £750 for their inconvenience.

And we want a cashless society?

If I was to inherit that kind of cash I would make sure I had the correct sort code,it’s not rocket science 😳

It’s astonishing how it’s taking so few banks so long to implement this. A competent programmer could extend data fields and write a comparison query to report mismatches in 1 day. Even with loads of testing the should be able to implement in 1 month.

Expensive mistake

When i transfer Money I check I double check then I re check... lesson to be learned im just gonna check my account to see if its in my account. I promise 🤑🤞 to pay it back to you 🏖🚤🚘💺. Well what's left.

The guy who received in error is some piece of work

What the hell are Barclays doing giving someone else the same account number even though the name and sort code are different? I banked with them once never again it was 2 years of stressful mistakes.

Shame on the person who refused to return the funds. Barclays should have done a Bacs recall to retrieve the funds

I get that the guy made an error with supplying the wrong sort code but shame on the person who “refused” to give it back. Astonishing.

Disgraceful

‘At present, anyone wanting to transfer money enters the intended recipient's name, account number and sort code. However, the name is not checked.’ Then why is there a place for the bloody name? Glad they got it all back plus compensation, stupid bank!

I'm sure the bank can prosecute as it was 'Stealing by Finding'!

Barclays said 'we thought we could get away with not paying the legal fees, but then he went public, so we immediately saw the error of our ways'. On a related note, can the 'customer who refused to pay it back' now be dragged down to court to be charged with e.g.theft/fraud/etc?

The computer says “ noooooo” ;)

Sounds familiar. Barclays did this to me. It was only £200 but they refused to do anything to help me. I have no idea why anybody banks with them. Worst customer service I have ever experienced.

Customer made the mistake, but present system does not check name. Crazy

Knock Knock on the other persons door. I’d call it theft. There used to be a board game called “Travel Go” a card in one of the packs was “Bank error in your favour... collect $200” but this amount is ridiculous and IS THEFT!

Surely this is a failure in the process not checking the account details with the account name? And if the bank had sent their money they would be getting it back.

Another non-story. He got both the capital and court expenses back. He lost nothing.

Banking systems should be designed to make it impossible to submit in inconsistent bank name recipient name sort code and account number. Its far too easy to mistake a digit but the combination should be automatically consistency checked on entry.

The name of the person who refused to return the money should be published. Name and shame.

What a nightmare. Glad you persevered and got what was rightly yours. Cheers ...

LBCNews DailyMirror RBS .. what do they mean ‘the customer refused to return it’?.. that’s absurd!..

Bloody ridiculous.

The payment must match all the details including the name. This payment could not be successful almost anywhere in the world.

It is theft as the person who receives it knows it isn’t their money people have been jailed for it

What a disgrace. Give the man his money

My father had terrible trouble many years ago with Barclays when incorrect funds were transferred into his account. Mistakes will always happen but it seems that little has changed in this bank's attitude to rectifying errors. Very poor. I just don't get why they'd do this 🤔

The big point here is the utter shit bag who refused to pay it back.

How the fuck have they not just had the money returned to them by the person who fucking received it!?

He made a mistake but this is a fucking disgrace. Certain people like to talk about 'deregulation' as if it is unambigulously positive. This is a failure in regulation, pure and simple. A sensible system would have rules in place that force banks to stop this from happening.

I was warned in the bank when I transferred money that there was no return

The man admits it was his mistake but I put the blame on the person the money was sent to. Surely if you get £193k in your bank you ask the bank why and certainly don’t refuse to return to when asked. That’s not a few quid that’s huge money so clearly was missed

This is the third news story in as many weeks where Barclays have messed. We had a delay receiving an inheritance with Barclays but nothing like as terrible as this. Something is amiss.

How can it be possible in this day and age that an account number can be valid if written incorrectly? I worked as a cashier during the holidays in the 90s and it was virtually impossible to enter the wrong number as valid numbers (incl sort code) had to add up correctly.

Off subject.

So as usual the customer makes the mistake and the bank gets the blame. What a load of absolute bollocks.

What kind of a person receives a significant sum of money - clearly in error - and then refuses to return it until compelled to by the Courts? He/she should have had to pay the poor man's costs.

If that was me there’s no way I’d keep someone else’s money I’d give it straight back to them

I mean a) it’s all electronic so right now the name is irrelevant. B) banks can only send money where they are told to. C) surely you double check that stuff - I had to check my bank details when I had to sort inheritance out before the money was finally sent.

If you don't return the money isn't it theft? If Barclays sent me too much money by mistake they'd soon take it back.

Terrible, my heart goes out to them.

so barclays just let it slid without checking the name match on the bank accounts even when account number & sort code were matching on 99%. fine

Dice error, Esp. no quiere me informe fuera?

Barclays again!

Publish the guys name!

Corbyn wants a nice slice of that, throw it down the NHS financial black hole.

can i bum a few bucks though

Sad

‘I lost my £193,000 inheritance – with one wrong digit on my sort code’Peter Teich sent his cash to another Barclays customer, but offered it him just £25 as a token gesture If you had the quantum computer that Centerpartiet in Sweden apparently seems to have some where that'd never happen Two crappy Barclay stories in one week. Remarkable! He did recover it, and Barclays paid all his costs. Poor show from Barclays. Guardian I'm not sure how relevant his being disabled and 74 is, as he's evidently in possession of all his faculties. Are you trying to say 74 year olds r stupid, disabled ppl are stupid, or both?

Not sure voting for Al Johnson or Farage will be the answer he is looking for. They may rip up the NHS and start again. From that article some people are confused & irrational. The ex miner interviewed will vote either Tory or Brexit Party even though he supported Labour & Remain, because he wants change.
