It is the stuff of financial nightmares. You get one digit wrong on the sort code, and send a huge amount of cash to the wrong person. They refuse to return it, and the bank washes its hands of the matter, blaming you for the mistake.
“I didn’t want someone else’s money in my account and I was worried about spending the money so I transferred £150,000 of it into premium bonds.“ Whose premium bonds? Individual maximum holding is £50,000
Next time send it to mine
State of BarclaysUK over this
It is a terrible pity that the person who tried to keep the money was not named. That sort of arseholery deserves to be outed.
Barclays is a shambles, their website barely works in places. Have had a number of headaches trying to get information on my mortgage.
Yet I had money transferred to my account by a bank by mistake they immediately started a procedure to recover the money. I did send it back to them without them needing to do that, but deducted the transfer charge. It was nice having £300 000 for a few days!
I had a similar incident with a small sum and the wrongful recipient also refused to return the money. It was only £100 but this case in the Guardian demonstrates the need for a regulatory mechanism to compel dishonest recipients to return the funds..without a court case.
I mean damn......you got to be a horrible person to refuse returning the money...even after being asked
What happened to that awful creature that refused to pay it back at the start
Incredible story of horrendous behaviour of bankers! What happened to those responsible for the £25 offer?
Carelessness.
This is absolutely abhorrent behaviour by Barclays.
Don't banks freeze and close accounts for spurious political reasons without telling them the reasons yet they allowed the thief open access to their account knowing they had money that didn't belong to them. They should have frozen the thiefs account until the money was repaid.
That's awful. At least he got his money back. Here in America, Adult Protective Services (APS) aka Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS or DHS); state and federal government agencies, lure wealthy seniors into 'Guardianships' and they or 'Conservators' rob & kill them.
elay55 Nigerian payment system is more advanced than Britain's
So Barclays was completely uninterested in doing the right thing until a newspaper intervened, then was almost gleeful to pay £46k in compensation, but was not in the slightest bit interested before being shamed? If only the aggrieved customer had contacted the Guardian earlier!
Wouldn’t you just love to know who the guy is that held on to the money and is now spending it ?
When you see the stuff Barclays HSBC_UK etc get up to, I hope they ALL get driven out of business by the challenger banks. This was a 10 minute job for barclays yet they are too lazy /greedy to do anything until the national press get involved.
Thankfully, next year the 'Confirmation of Payee' service will be live. It will double-check whether the name attached to a payment matches the sort code and account number, and warn you if it looks like you're about to send money to the wrong account.
So much for the money laundering checks that banks are meant to carry out. Surely suddenly having that much money credited to your account without reason should ring alarm bells at the bank and temporarily freeze the funds.
This is such a sad and frustrating story. It oughta be recognised as theft when someone deliberately keeps money that isn't theirs.
jawndotnet I'm curious how StarlingBank and monzo would handle a circumstance like this?
Aren't banks just great? And isn't the unintended recipient of the money just a fine human being?
Nothing in the local law books regarding unjust enrichment?
Glad to see he got it back, plus legal fees, and interest. The bank could have saved themselves so much money if they’d just sorted it out.
É quem não tem o que perde . Como faz meu guru .um minuto amais para passar a viver mais 15 para usufruir a fortuna adquirida qual seria a cotação de mercado em Dólar.
Spoiler: he got it all back - including legal fees and £825 bonus.
Imagine being the prick that kept the money.
So glad he recovered his money.
Keeping any money wrongly credited to your account could lead to you being charged with retaining wrongful credit' under the Theft Act 1968.
This is nuts.
This is a practice run for when Corbyn steals your inheritance. Get used to it
There is nooooo way! I suggest Barclays return his money and go after the other guy or I’ll take down Barclays like Douche Bank. That’s right, it was me. Deutsche Bank was doing swimmingly until I went after them, strictly by the guidance of the Holy Ghost.
Hahahaha yes.. millenials 1 - boomers nil...
Unethical Business Practices lead to harming world stability.
The person who tried to keep the money is a disgusting human being. It's quite simply theft.
Jewish babies are born with a god particle
That’s horrible...
That’s peanuts for Larry David though, surely?
Interesting if an ATM spits out €50s instead of €20s they will find the misappropriation and you will owe them the money 💰, clearly a name number and account has to correlate with the transfer, the Bank should be held accountable for this error not the customer.
Good to see the money was eventually back with the rightful owner
Please be aware this happens all the time. Internet banking means you are actually working for your bank, without any of the failsafes, that existed when you visited your local bank branch for financial transactions. So easy to make a mistake with one number or digit.
Disgraceful non action from Barclays. The fact that it took this man going to the papers to get his money refunded is horrific.
Funny thing if the bank accidentally paid their own money to someone’s account and that person spent it, they’d be rightly prosecuted but in this case they don’t care since it’s not theirs. Smh
I lost my inheritance with 5 wrong digits on my lottery ticket
TabethaBee
'Jerked around' by Barclays on a time-payment for Apple computer; not told of monthly min aft paying off 1 w/o it..Then refused a similar Barclays offer, paid all upfront.. - ‘I lost my £193K inheritance- w/1 wrong digit on my sort code’ at Barclays Bank
In this day and age I don't understand why solicitors/people don't send a test payment of £1, contact the other party to verify payment and then make the full payment using the same details.
Unbelievable and surely the recipient who refused to do the right thing should be named and shamed
I am appalled by this. Surely this misappropriation of funds is fraud? The recipient knew this was not his money. Hopefully, something horrible will now befall the recipient! What a despicable person he is.
The same applies to Irish banking practices. Names are not tied to accounts. I could enter ten names, all with the same account details, and they will not be flagged.
Barclays behaviour is shameful. Corporate sociopaths. How do their employees sleep at night? More banking regulations are needed, expecting them to do the right thing is futile. financialombuds barclays
Terrible customer support by Barclays and the whole saga could so easily been avoided had they applied some common sense instead of being such insensitive jobs-worths.
Two crappy Barclay stories in one week. Remarkable!
He did recover it, and Barclays paid all his costs. Poor show from Barclays. Guardian I'm not sure how relevant his being disabled and 74 is, as he's evidently in possession of all his faculties. Are you trying to say 74 year olds r stupid, disabled ppl are stupid, or both?
If you had the quantum computer that Centerpartiet in Sweden apparently seems to have some where that'd never happen
