After days of rival briefings from their outriders, the bitterness of the Conservative leadership contest spilled into the openA clear dividing line has now opened up between, who is urging fiscal discipline, and the two candidates with the greatest chance of facing him in the final run-off of Tory grassroots: Liz Truss and Penny Mordaunt, who are promising more help with the cost of living by cutting taxes.
who will oversee a continuity economy or one who will cut taxes now – despite inflation climbing past 9 per cent. The other two candidates, who are currently in fourth and fifth place among MPs – Kemi Badenoch and Tom Tugendhat – had the most ground to make up in this first televised debate, and did so with strong performances and personal stories that warmed them to the audience.
Mr Tugendhat spoke directly to an NHS worker who asked what the candidates would do to tackle the backlog, and thanked her colleagues for saving his fellow soldiers’ lives and for helping to deliver his two children. Mrs Badenoch made reference to her own father’s illness, her experience of blackouts in Nigeria, and her own pregnancies in a deeply personal performance which will have registered with the TV audience.
