Penny Mordaunt falters on tax and trans rights as Rishi Sunak comes out on top in TV battle

After days of rival briefings from their outriders, the bitterness of the Conservative leadership contest spilled into the openA clear dividing line has now opened up between, who is urging fiscal discipline, and the two candidates with the greatest chance of facing him in the final run-off of Tory grassroots: Liz Truss and Penny Mordaunt, who are promising more help with the cost of living by cutting taxes.

Mrs Badenoch made reference to her own father’s illness, her experience of blackouts in Nigeria, and her own pregnancies in a deeply personal performance which will have registered with the TV audience.
