The rear of the shop is taken up with a cutting table and industrial machines for sewing, overlocking and hemming jersey, dominated by a massive embroidery machine in a suitably Memphis shade of turquoise which produces the patches he designs on his laptop. From the street you can see Matthew and Sarah at work, cutting, stitching and embroidering their clothes. "We wanted it to be transparent," says Matthew, "what we’re doing here.
"So we have very minimal waste," he notes, nodding to a small box of jersey off-cuts that will become PBS baby clothes. "I think that was really important for us, having seen the amount of waste produced by big companies."Palm Bay Skates has quickly established itself in the neighbourhood. The little shop is frequented by not only Thanet skaters and London day-trippers but also local residents who routinely pop in for a chat.
