Three million opposite-sex couples who live together, and many more who live apart, will be able to enjoy the financial benefits of marriage without getting wed by the end of the year, after a bill extending civil partnerships passed today.

The news follows a supreme court ruling in June last year, hard fought by equality campaigners Rebecca Steinfeld and Charles Keidan, that found restrictions on same-sex civil partnerships in breach of human rights.

Homophobes making a mockery of civil partnerships here. Traditional marriage was their right yet chose to take this to court

These two have been at this for years. Clearly they're far too unique and special for a normal marriage. I expect this battle has become the foundation of their relationship and it will all fall apart now they've run out of injustices to fight.
