The forced installation of pre-payment meters has been branded 'disgraceful' and 'outrageous' by the business secretary. Grant Shapps told Sky's Sophy Ridge that he has called on energy companies to stop this behaviour.

Grant Shapps criticises Ofgem for"taking at face value" what energy company bosses were telling them and tells energy suppliers to"refocus" efforts onto their customers, after vulnerable individuals were forced to have prepayment meters installed in their homes. Why you can trust Sky News

Mr Shapps accused the energy regulator of having"the wool pulled over their eyes" and told it to toughen up on suppliers after"vulnerable" customers struggling with their energy bills had pay-as-you go gas and electricity meters wrongfully installed in their homes. "I'm also concerned the regulator is too easily having the wool pulled over their eyes by taking at face value what energy companies are telling them," he said.

He said he had hauled in British Gas bosses and had previously made clear to Ofgem they could not allow this to happen, but all the regulator did was go to the energy companies and tell them to follow the rules, which the companies were saying they were, without a proper investigation.

Wetter than water Tories. Socialising the costs of the feckless.

So how does the company get money from the people spending it on other things? The disgrace is leaving them at the mercy of the plebs with no remedy.

Easier to get forgiveness than to get permission

We don’t know the full story. What have the people done or not done to have a payment meter installed?

I knew about this through press reports months ago. The waving through of entry warrants, the damage the meters do to people who are struggling every day

Fake name shapps full of 💩

einousAnd um, are these people going to get an apology and are we going to see someone prosecuted and um, are these people going to be compensated for these h infractions?

Meanwhile what exactly is the govt doing about supermarkets and others engaged in gross profiteering with food prices. Once compared with Europe we are paying more. The UK is a profiteers market.

Please us why have standing charges rocketed? How’s the war in Ukraine affected Standing Charges?

'Ooooh, Stop It!' - yeah, that will work with them. 🤡

'called on energy companies to stop this behaviour.', wow I bet they were scared

It's been going on for years.

Everyone involved in this who committed perjury under oath to obtain court entry warrants. Your day back in the court is on its way.

He makes a good point

How much do you want to bet Arvato were incentivized by having the contract directly tied to the number of meters successfully installed? If you pay them per meter and give them targets they are going to do whatever they need to do to meet those targets. Pretty simple math.
