Nottingham attacks: Special review of mental health services finds public 'at risk of harm'

Mental health patients and members of the public are being put at risk of harm due to poor access to care inThe two parts of the report, carried out by the Care Quality Commission , looked at patient safety and quality of care provided by the trust and an assessment of progress made at Rampton Hospital. The second half will examine the care Calocane received at the trust and is expected to be published this summer.

The CQC said it found some improvements, but criticised trust leaders for a "reactive" approach to safety concerns and "not always prioritising engagement with people who use services". A total of 1,233 people were on the waiting list for local mental health teams at the time of the review.The watchdog said many said they felt frustrated by “immense” or “extraordinary” wait times. One person who gave feedback said they had been waiting for more than one year.

Responding to the findings of the review, NHFT said it is "truly sorry", adding "it is clear that sometimes we have let down patients and their families". Its chief executive, Ifti Majid, said the trust had already begun making improvements. University students Grace O'Malley-Kumar and Barnaby Webber, both 19, and school caretaker Ian Coates, 65, were killed in a series of stabbings on June 13. The families of the victims, who was was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, was a patient with NHFT between 2020 and 2022 but stopped engaging with mental health services in September of that year.

Mr Baylis' wife of 40 years, Sally, said the lack of communication left her with "no clue what was going on".The special review has made a raft of recommendations for Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. "We are currently developing our integrated improvement plan and we will ensure that every recommendation within the CQC’s rapid review report is implemented so that those who use our services receive the high quality care they deserve," he said. "Once again I want to reaffirm our commitment to improving the quality and safety of our services. We will work relentlessly to ensure all of our patients and their families receive the high quality care they deserve.
