The review was ordered by the government after concerns were raised over the care of Valdo Calocane

Mental health patients and members of the public are being put at risk of harm due to poor access to care in, a healthcare watchdog has found. A special review was ordered into Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust by the government after concerns were raised over its care of Nottingham attacks killer Valdo Calocane.

The report, published on Tuesday, March 26, said people struggled to access the care they needed when they needed it, "putting themselves and potentially members of the public, at risk of harm". It said a high demand for services and staffing shortages meant that patients were not always being kept safe.

University students Grace O'Malley-Kumar and Barnaby Webber, both 19, and school caretaker Ian Coates, 65, were killed in a series of stabbings on June 13. The families of the victims, 32, was a patient with NHFT between 2020 and 2022 but stopped engaging with mental health services in September of that year. He was then discharged back to his GP's care, with NHS Nottingham and Nottinghamshire saying the GP made several attempts to contact him, but no response was received.
