Patients on the cardiac list are waiting for procedures such as open heart surgery, including bypasses and having stents or pacemakers fitted. But the Prime Minister also argued an extra 430,000 patients could have been treated had doctors and nurses decided not to strike in pursuit of bumper pay deals.
The NHS was told to eliminate two-year waits by July 2022, apart from for those who chose to wait longer, did not want to travel to be seen faster, or for very complex cases requiring specialist treatment. Earlier this year, alarming data also revealed that premature deaths from cardiovascular problems, such as heart attacks and strokes, have hit their highest level in more than a decade.
