Sajid Javid is considering switching the stamp duty burden from buyers on to sellers as he considers a shake-up of taxes ahead of his first budget as chancellor.
Mr Javid, who moved into Downing Street at the weekend, has said he is"looking at various options" when it comes to stamp duty.There are several bands for stamp duty.

Rubbish idea. Tax on the old. Older people sell larger houses that have already paid stamp duty to buy. Know will may have to pay again as downsize to smaller cheaper homes requiring, at present, small stamp duty. Or further tax in death.

This actually seems a reasonably sensible policy. The selling party will have been subject to all sorts of tax breaks and favourable conditions in the past, the buyer finds it much harder to get on the ladder. To simplify things, why should the boomer get another payout? Not sure about this, I paid stamp duty when I bought my house 15 years ago and when I go into a retirement home I’ll have to pay it again while the purchaser doesn’t? Or am I missing something?
