The results indicate elevated levels of ubiquitinated CHTs and of several cytokines in the brain, but not spleen, of STs, and that stimulation of the innate immune system further elevates CHT ubiquitination levels in parallel with increases in cytokine production. Together our findings signify a role of neuro-immune modulators in the regulation of the choline transporter, thereby suggesting a role of these modulators in the addiction vulnerability trait indexed by sign-tracking.
Following phenotype assessment, brain tissues and spleen were harvested to determine levels of brain CHT ubiquitination, brain and spleen cytokines and chemokines, and the effects of LPS on these measures. All experiments were designed to follow identical timelines, including animal housing periods, PCA testing periods, and the time between PCA testing and tissue harvesting .
Once more research is conducted, I would be interested to see what this might mean for new addiction treatments. This combined with new findings on the genetic markers for addiction makes me hopeful that we will finally give this population the help they need.
