Charities and campaigners fear the changes will raise the bar for eligibility, and could see some vulnerable people having their benefit reduced or removed altogether.
Mr Grint has osteoarthritis in both hips; Raynaud’s syndrome, which affects blood circulation; and erythromelalgia, a rare condition that causes burning pain, mainly in the feet. One of his hands was badly damaged in a car accident. Ms Grint, who sat with her son during his interview, said the assessor asked three times whether he was able to get out of his wheelchair to access his mobility car.
Ms Vickers, from Leeds, said she has been through the process of “proving” her conditions four times over the past decade, with her last assessment coming in 2022. “I dread the reassessment,” said Ms Vickers. “You have to prove yourself every time. There’s endless trauma with it.”
